Did you know there are certain medical conditions that can harm your smile and hamper your progress toward a top-notch oral health? Well, it’s true. In fact, there are five of them. Those are:

Acid reflux: Acid reflux can harm your smile by eroding your teeth. This is the case because the stomach acid that comes up is extremely strong. It can dissolve the outer layers of your teeth and promote tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. To prevent this from happening, it’s best to rinse your mouth regularly with water. Please don’t brush your teeth right away. Doing so can make the problem worse.

Stomach ulcers: Stomach ulcers themselves can’t affect your oral health, but the ulcer medication can. It can cause a black tongue, which can be a scary sight to see. However, there is nothing to worry about. The side effect will go away once you are done with treatment.

Chronic kidney disease: Chronic kidney disease can affect your smile. Oftentimes, it can cause fish or urine-smelling breath. If you experience these symptoms, please see your primary care physician as soon as possible.

Diabetes: Diabetes can increase your chances of falling victim to gum disease. This is because it alters your body’s immune system and allows the bacteria in your mouth to attack and irritate your gums. Diabetes can also cause tooth decay and tooth loss. To prevent these dental issues, it’s best to keep up on oral hygiene by brushing and flossing.

High blood pressure: High blood pressure is another condition that does not directly alter your oral health—but the medication does. The medication can cause gingival enlargement, which involves your gums swelling and growing over your smile.
