Are you seeking a strong, healthy smile? One of the most important things you can do is note the nutrients you expose your teeth and gums to. In no particular order, here are some of the most teeth-harming foods:
1. Hard Candy: These candies are damaging in two ways. First, they contain high amounts of sugar, which plaque bacteria turns into acid and wears down your tooth enamel. Second, their tough texture puts your teeth at risk for chips or cracks.
2. Ice: You might be surprised this is on this list. After all, it’s only solidified water. Ice is similar to hard candy in that if you chew on it, there’s a possibility of a dental emergency. It’s best to use it just to chill your drinks.
3. Sticky food: What’s a sticky food? Examples include dried fruit, caramels, or tootsie rolls. These stay on your teeth longer than any other kind of food, promoting tooth decay and gum disease.
4. Sour sweets: Candies that are sweet with a bite, like Warheads or Sour Patch Kids, contain high amounts of both acid and sugar, which kill your tooth enamel and spike your risk of cavities.
Knowledge is power. Now that you know that these foods harm your teeth, you can choose what to do about it. You may choose to limit your eating and drinking such foods to special occasions, remove some of them from your diet entirely, or upgrade your oral hygiene routine. If and when you do choose to partake, try drinking water and chewing sugarless gum afterward to clean your mouth. And don’t forget to floss once a day and brush your teeth twice a day.
