If you grind your teeth at night on a regular basis or if you have a bad habit of nibbling on foreign objects or using your teeth as tools, you are at increased risk of suffering a chipped tooth. Even if a chip doesn’t cause heightened sensitivity or pain, you should still consider having it repaired at Ninth East Dental.

Sometimes a small chip can be repaired by an amalgam or composite resin filling. A large chip or one that is on a critical location of the tooth might need a dental crown. Drs. Huang and Huang are even more likely to recommend this course of treatment if the chip is on the biting edge of the tooth.

A crown is a near-perfect replica of the original tooth enamel layer. The crown itself is hollow to allow it to be anchored on an abutment that is formed out of the dentin, pulp, and root of the tooth.

Once the abutment has been prepared, our dentists will make a detailed impression of the area. It will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be custom made. In the interim, a temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

You will be called back in for a follow-up appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented securely into place.

If you live in the Provo, Utah, area and you have a chipped tooth, you should call 801-854-9140 to have it treated and repaired at Ninth East Dental.
